African Dance

African DanceAfrican dance is one that is full of crazy, intense energy. If you have a lot of built up tension, stress, or have anger problems, this might be the dance for you. African dance is performed to the rhythm of the drumbeat, the 'heartbeat' of African dance.

African dance moves involve a lot of throwing and thrashing the upper body, shoulders, neck and head around, while still maintaining control over the abdominal muscles. In other words, unlike most other dances, African dance has different centers in the body. The head, the shoulders, the arms, the chest, and the pelvis are all different centers that move in conjunction with each other, and not together as a whole.

Most of the power behind the moves come from the thighs and core, so one must be very strong, and again extremely energetic to dance this dance. African dance originated, of course, in Africa. It is widely acknowledged that in history, Ancient African dance was a major part of a tribe's essence.

Tribes would perform ritual dances before war, times of harvest, and during various ceremonies. Dances were intended to ward off negative energies and spirits, as well as served as religious offerings in exchange for a tribe's prosperity. Over the years, the African dance made way to America with the slave trade, and throughout the following years African dance influenced a number of dances like the Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Twist, Tap and Jazz dance, Hip Hop dance, even Zumba! Learning real African dance is both challenging and tiring, but well worth it in the end because it gives you a greater understanding of many other kinds of dance, as well as a greater sense of the African culture.
